Six years after theStar WarsTV show’s premiere, a crucial part of the timeline inThe Mandalorianhas at long last been confirmed.Din Djarinmay now be one ofStar Wars’most important recognizable characters, but there’s actually quite little we know about the famed Mandalorian’s past.

The most critical detail arrives via flashback inThe Mandalorianseason 1, when Din revisits the droid attack on his homeworld of Aq Vetina. The Mandalorianseason 1 finale confirms that the B-2 battle droids killed his parents just before the Mandalorians ultimately came to his rescue and took him in as a foundling.

The exact timeline of these events, however, was never indicated, especially with these Mandalorians clearly belonging toDeath Watch. Some argued that it could have happened directly after the Clone Wars ended, while others reasoned that it must have happened during the galactic conflict. Now, audiences finally have a definitive answer.

We Now Know When Din Djarin Was Orphaned

Preview pages for the upcoming sourcebookStar Wars The Mandalorian Visual Guideby Pablo Hidalgo, as shared byStarWarsTimeline.com, include the initial page on Din Djarin’s character, which revisits his haunted past. In retelling the story of him being orphaned, the book specifies thatit takes place during the Clone Wars.

Din Djarin raises his Amban phase-pulse blaster rifle and takes aim at something offscreen.

This may seem obvious to some, but the only hints we had of it taking place around 19 BBY - the final year of the Clone Wars and the year theGalactic Empirerose to power - came from the types of ships used by the Separatist droid army. This confirms that the war was, in fact, still ongoing at that point.

This also has implications for the story of Mandalorians as a whole up until this point. Near the end of the Clone Wars,Death Watch was split following the death of Pre Vizsla at the hands of Darth Maul, with some swearing loyalty to the Sith Lord and others following Bo-Katan Kryze’s revolt against him.

The Death Watch Mandalorians who rescued Din Djarin, however, don’t seem to fall into either category, if this rescue was truly happening around the same time. Confirming this Clone Wars timeline seems to promise an interesting development in Mandalorian lore during the galactic conflict, especially where Death Watch is concerned.

Star Wars Is Beginning To Figure Out The Mandalorian’s Timeline

Above all else, however, this confirmation of when Din Djarin’s homeworld was attacked is promising news for more upcoming clarity aboutThe Mandalorian’s timeline. The TV show has become infamous forhaving a timeline that seems to make little to no sense, mostly because it has constantly contradicted itself.

For example, the official sourcebookStar Wars Timelinesplaces the events ofThe Mandalorianseasons 1 and 2 andThe Book of Boba Fettall in the year 9 ABY, despite the fact that this timeline would mean that Nevarro’s city developed essentially overnight and Din Djarin and Grogu spent virtually no time apart from one another after season 2.

Confirming when Din Djarin’s homeworld was attacked is thus a step in the right direction for the TV show’s timeline having more clarity. WithThe Mandalorian and Grogumovieinching closer on the horizon, this could beThe Mandalorian’s first step to establishing its world more firmly before hitting the big screen.

The Mandalorian and Groguhits theaters August 11, 2025.
