Netflixwill be turning a literary classic into a contemporary tale withThe Netherfield Girls. The streamer has had a lot of success with their original content in recent years, especially with genre series likeStranger Thingsand period romance adaptations likeBridgerton.The Netherfield Girls, however, is set to be a Netflix original movie.
The movie will be a modern adaptation of a Jane Austen classic. Jane Austen’s novels have been adapted for the screen regularly since the 1930s, with varying degrees of success by different studios. Details have been kept relatively under wraps about the movie since its original announcement, but it is in active development for the streaming service.

The Netherfield Girls Is Confirmed
The Netherfield Girlshas been confirmed byVariety.Varietymade theoriginal announcement for the movie in 2021, detailing that Netflix had optioned the script from writer Becca Gleason. At the time, Gleason was mostly known for her work on short films.
The Netherfield Girls Cast
The first announced cast member forThe Netherfield Girlsis Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Ramakrishnan got her breakout role from Netflix in the coming-of-age seriesNever Have I Everin the lead role of Indian American high schooler Devi. Since then, she has also done a lot of voice over work in movies likeTurning Redand theMy Little Ponyfranchise. She made her feature film debut in the satireSlantedin 2025.
InThe Netherfield Girls, Ramakrishnan is set to star as a modern-day version ofPride and Prejudice’sElizabeth Bennet. She confirmed her casting via Instagram.
While the rest of the cast has not been announced yet, the director has.Becca Gleason will be directing her own script for Netflix. She did the same with her feature directorial debutSummer ‘03starring Joey King in 2018. Most recently, however, Gleason has been a consulting director and writer for Amazon seriesThe Summer I Turned Pretty, so she is no stranger to coming-of-age stories or love stories.

The Netherfield Girlsis set to be a “fresh and contemporary” take on Jane Austen’sPride and Prejudice.Though there have been many adaptations ofPride and Prejudice, including a Bollywood version, a version with zombies, and several Hallmark Channel original movies that have strayed from the source material, the best-known adaptations arethe BBC miniseriesand the 2005 feature film, both of which stay very close to the novels.
The Netherfield Girls, on the other hand, isbeing compared to adaptations likeEasy Aand10 Things I Hate About You.While the former adapted Nathaniel Hawthorne’sScarlet Letter(and metatextually addressed the book within the movie), the latter adapted William Shakespeare’sThe Taming of the Shrew. Both have become teen rom-com classics and are some of the best teen movies ever made.

The Netherfield Girlsgets its name from Netherfield Park, the estate being leased to the character Charles Bingley in the novel and the location for much of the original story’s events.
