Sony’s The Road ToPS5conference arrived after much anticipation, but left many feeling like something was missing. Without beating around the bush, many thought that the reveal would showcase the official, finalized design of the new console, but this ended up not being the case. Sony even had the opportunity to show the design, or at least a deconstructed version of it, when it placed drawn versions of all previous PlayStation consoles next to each other but showed only the logo in place of aPS5console design. Naturally, many fans are disappointed, but there is a actually a good reason for the omission.

For those unaware, Mark Cerny just talked for about an hour to fans about everything but the thing they wanted to hear, resulting inPS5 trending on twitter for a hilarious reason. For those most part, new features were left out of the conversation in favor of talking about specs and development potential of the new PlayStation 5 console, and this has left a sour taste in the mouths of many players. Despite what it may seem, there is actually a good reason why the design reveal was not on the top of Sony’s priority list for this event, or even on the priority list at all. Cerny wasn’t talking to players, he was talking to developers.

Most fans went into the PS5 livestream expecting the console to finally be revealed and to get amped about all the new and brilliant features it would sport, and while there were some neat features teased, likeload times 100 times faster than the PS4, these expectations ultimately were not met. The PS5 “reveal” as it was being referred to, wasn’t much of a reveal at all, but then it really was fans who started calling it that in the first place. Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, even says at the very beginning of the live stream that this information comes in lieu of a cancelled conference for GDC.

What is GDC?

The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is an annual event in which developers get together to share ideas and collaborate on their work.Sony was planning this conference for GDC 2020, but it was unfortunately postponed due to growing concerns about the Novel Coronavirus. Ultimately, this is the reason why the physical design for the PS5 wasn’t shown, because the entire “reveal” was really meant for the developers more than the players.

Sony could have done a much better job at marketingthis event for what it was rather than letting rumors spread like wildfire that fans would finally get a first look at the highly anticipated console. Although it makes sense that developers care a lot more about what’s inside the box than what the box looks like, Sony seemed to market the event just as much towards players as it did to developers (if not more), which is another factor which led to confusion during the somewhat dry presentation and extremely factual presentation.

PS5 Reveal

The PS5 will likely be revealed soon nonetheless, as so far thePS5 release date has not yet been delayed due to the Coronavirus.  Although it may have been disappointing for many that the design of the PlayStation 5 wasn’t shown, there is still a wealth of information in Cerny’s presentation which he does a decent job explaining to those who may not fully understand it.
