The SandmanshowrunnerAllan Heinberg has talked about the possibility of the canceled Netflix show returningfor a third season, following season 2’s major Dream twist. The Netflix fantasy series was adapted from the comic book of the same name by Neil Gaiman, and, despite early promise,The Sandmanseason 2 endingmarked the conclusion to the show.

The Sandmanhad an ensemble cast, and was developed by Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and showrunner Allan Heinberg. The show’s conclusion sawDaniel Hall, the infant son of Hector and Lyta Hall, return as an adult to become the new Dreamof the Endless. Heinberg has addressed the ending, and the show’s season 3 chances.

PerTHR, Heinberg talked about how theshow’s conclusion set up plenty of plot points that could have been explored in season 3. He detailed how Daniel’s transition to becoming the new Dream is a story that could have been told throughout the show’s third season. Check out Heinberg’s comments below:

“When we made this show, there were a lot of questions about, “Well, could there be a season three? What would it look like if we were through with Dream’s story, and we wanted to tell Daniel’s story?” So we wanted to cast a Daniel whose story we could begin to tell if we were lucky enough to have a season three.

I wanted to get him to the point where he was actually nervous to meet the siblings, but [he was] welcomed. As Lucienne says, “You might even enjoy them this time.” Daniel is very different from Dream, and Jacob is a very different actor from Tom. So I think we leave him on a note of hopefulness and excitement.

As Destruction says, “If at any point you want to leave, I’ll come get you. We can go on a road trip.” So I hope that people leave feeling excited about the idea of Daniel being the new Dream and hopeful about the future of this family.”

He continued, discussing how much he loved working on the show, and that he would happily have continued writingThe Sandmanfor the rest of his career.

“I am leaving this job reluctantly. I’ve never had a job where every episode is like a little movie, and you get to write about the most important things in a human life — and not just a human life, but gods’ lives. No comic book property I’ve ever encountered goes as deep or as wide as Sandman. It’s not an inexpensive show to make.

And if we had a viewership that really demanded it and it made financial sense for Netflix, I could happily go on writing Sandman forever because you can write about anything. You can tell any kind of story in any genre, and you can do it intelligently, elegantly and passionately.”

Heinberg concluded by stating that if the show had posted similar numbers toStranger ThingsorWednesday’s viewership figures, season 3 would almost certainly have been greenlit.

“It has been literally a dream job for me, but it was a blessing to be able to bring Dream’s story to a close and then hint at what the future could be if the numbers were there.

I mean, we have no plan [for more]. But if we had Stranger Things numbers, if we had Wednesday numbers, you can be sure people would be knocking on our doors saying, “OK, we need more!” But The Sandman’s appeal is a bit more limited than those shows. It’s not for everyone.

It’s a miracle that they allowed us to make it in the first place, because it is so weird. I mean, Lady Johanna Constantine [Jenna Coleman] falls in love with a disembodied head and ends up spending the rest of her life with him! It’s an odd show. So I feel very lucky to have had these two seasons, and it’s a miracle that it happened.”

What This Means For The Potential Of The Sandman Season 3

Daniel’s Story Could Have Enhanced The Show’s Mythology

The Sandmanseason 3could have done a lot to enhance and improve the show, and boost the mythology of the world. Being faithful to the source material is one of the ways in whichThe Sandmanwas a big success, andDaniel Hall’s story, and journey as the new Dream, is a core part of the comic book.

As Heinberg’s comments suggest, the third season of the show would have focused on telling Daniel’s story, and showing how different a Dream he is to Morpheus. Of course, the show is not set to return, but it seems clear that the show has been written with enough material that season 3’s story could easily be told.

Our Take On The Chances Of The Sandman Season 3

It Is Unlikely Anymore Seasons Will Be Produced

While Netflix has canceled the show, there is always a chance that it could be uncanceled, or that the series might be picked up and continued on another platform. However, given the recentallegations against Gaiman, it feels very unlikelythat this would be the case, and it seems pretty definitive that this is the end of the show.

If there were to be a Sandman season 3 in the future, of course, Daniel would no doubt be central to that, and it is likely that Heinberg would return as well. The Sandmanmight be continued via another medium, or it could be subject to a reboot years down the line, but for now, the characters' journeys look to have concluded.
