The Sandmanproducer, David S. Goyer, has broken down why the show ended early, despite more seasons being planned. The show was adapted from the comic book series co-created by Neil Gaiman, and premiered on Netflix on June 10, 2025. Despite its success and critical recognition, the series concluded on June 12, 2025, after two seasons and 23 episodes.

The Sandmanfollows Morpheus, the personification of dreams, who escapes from 106 years in captivity and sets about restoring order to his realm, known as the Dreaming. Despite two more seasons being planned, it was revealed thatThe Sandmanseason 3 is not happening, and the show would end with season 2.

Destiny and Dream in The Sandman

PerComicBook.com, Goyer discussed the original plan for the show to span four 10-episode seasons, but the short length of some ofThe Sandmancomic issues meant that the show was burning through material faster than expected, so it didn’t make sense for the series to overstay its welcome. Check out Goyer’s comments below:

The biggest issue was when Allan Heinberg and I were first pitching the show, I think we envisioned four, 10-episode seasons.

The Sandman Season 2 Vol 2

Once we started figuring out Season 1, a lot of those early Sandman comics are only 17 or 18 pages long, and we found we were sometimes burning through three or four episodes. Obviously, it wasn’t a straight adaptation. The early Sandman issues were much more tied into DC continuity, but we were just burning through the source material faster than we thought.

One ask from Netflix, which was fair, is that we focus on Morpheus, on Dream, as much as possible. One of my favorite arcs, he is barely in. It’s very Jonathan Carroll-esque. We figured out how to do it that involved him. He shows up at the end of it, but that was a big arc that we removed.

I wasn’t as involved in beating out Season 2, but I was surprised when Allan first told me that he wanted to do the Kindly Ones, effectively, for four episodes, because it’s the longest arc in the book. I was a little unsure, but it works. It doesn’t feel like we are skipping over things. The other thing is, even though we adapted a lot of the standalone issues, some of them proved expensive. I think we ended up adapting about half a dozen of them.

It was really the liberation of knowing we were writing towards an end. If you’ll notice, the first season feels more episodic, with a Dream case of the week, whereas Season 2 feels like it has a very clear throughline.

Then, having the opportunity to make some of the decisions that Neil hadn’t made when writing the book. Allan embellished the relationship with the Corinthian. Things like that, I think, were additional add-ons. I really like the relationship with Puck and Loki, which were built upon even further than in the comic books. They were mischievous, delightful tricksters.

What This Means For The Sandman’s Cancellation

Goyer’s comments make a degree of sense, and for an adaptation likeThe Sandman, it would have been important not to deviate too much from the source material. The popularity of the comic book means audiences would want to see a faithful adaptation, and four seasons might have felt bloated, with too much padding, which could potentially detract from the story.

Dead Boy Detectives, another Gaiman Netflix adaptation, shared the same continuity asThe Sandman.

The fact thatThe Sandmanseason 2took on a less episodic format shows the creative team had a plan for wrapping up the season, and something to work towards. While there is narrative scope to revive the show, with the (semi)-cliffhanger ending of Daniel Hall replacing Morphus as the new Dream, there don’t seem to be any plans for this.

Our Take On The Sandman’s Cancellation

While Goyer’s comments do shine a light on the decision to cancel the show early, it also seems likely that the multiple sexual misconduct allegations against Gaiman will have contributed to the decision.Good Omensseason 3, another Gaiman adaptation, was paused in light of the allegations and changed to conclude with a feature-length episode.

Goyer and showrunner Allan Heinberg did an admirable job of concluding the show in a way that felt organic, but there’s little doubt that there is enough material thatThe Sandmancould have continued. It feels likely the decision for a premature cancellation was made in light of the Gaiman situation, though other factors will no doubt have played a role.
