A major character once simply vanished fromHappy Dayswith no explanation and never returned. The iconic show, which centers on the Cunningham family, is considered one ofthe best sitcoms of all timeand an important part of TV’s history for more than one reason.
The cast ofHappy Daysnotably changes throughout the show’s run. For example, although Henry Winkler’s Fonzie begins as a supporting character, he quickly becomes an integral figure in the series and arguably just as important as the Cunninghams. However, one key member of the family famously vanishes early into the series: Chuck.

“Give the Band a Hand”
“Guess Who’s Coming to Christmas”
Season 2, Episode 11
There’s no explanation as to where Chuck goes, strangely. AlthoughChuck isn’t an overly utilized character in the early installments ofHappy Days,it’s strange that he walks upstairs one day and never returns. However, as he’s also Richie and Joanie’s older brother, the fact that Chuck not only disappears fromHappy Days, but his entire existence vanishes, is odd.
Happy Days Seemed To Have Written Chuck Cunningham Out Of Existence
After Chuck Walked Up The Stairs, He Ceased To Exist
In later episodes of the show, there are opportunities forHappy Daysto reference Chuck, but it chooses not to.For example, in the season 11 finale, Howard mentions he’s proud of his “two kids,” which clearly is a reference to Richie and Joanie. But he completely forgets about his eldest son, which suggests Chuck no longer exists.
The show never explains his absence, butsome audiences have theorized the reason for Chuck’s disappearance. The most logical explanation is that Chuck leaves home to play basketball in college, which makes sense for the character, considering his love for the sport and his age.

The Chuck Cunningham Syndrome Is Now The Name Of A TV Trope
The legend ofHappy Days’ Chuck Cunningham is now a notable TV trope, and his name has since been used to refer to characters who suddenly disappear from a show without any explanation. Even years afterHappy Days’ famously introduced and then discarded Chuck, plenty of sitcoms have characters like these, intentional or not.
For example,That ‘70s Show’s timelinesees the disappearance of two characters.Donna’s sister, Tina, only appears briefly in one episode, and there is a later meta joke about her, but Donna is generally depicted as an only child for most of the show. The same happens to Laurie Forman, who vanishes after marrying Fez.
While there are a few references to the character, there’s no explanation as to where she is or her fate. The Office’s Cathy Simmsnever returns to Scranton after trying to seduce Jim in Florida, although the character wasn’t really missed.
Ben Geller inFriendsis another notable disappearing sitcom character. Ross’ son appears several times throughout the show, butafter Emma’s birth in season 9, Ben barely gets a mention, let alone any screen time.Interestingly, neither Susan nor Carol is referenced as well.
Happy Daysis a massively influential series that helped pave the way for titles like these. Although the sitcom is legendary and will be remembered by audiences for a lot of reasons, the show will never shake off the sudden absence of Chuck Cunningham.
