Rumors are flying thatObi-Wan Kenobiseason 2 could be in the works, but there’s only one way a second season of thisStar Warsshow could really work. There’s long been chatter thatObi-Wan Kenobicould be getting a season 2, although there wasn’t much substantiating those rumors.

Particularly becausetheObi-Wan Kenobiendingseemed to conclude things so nicely, and just given the show’s place intheStar Warstimeline, it seemed dubious at best. Yet, the online discussions about a potentialObi-Wan Kenobiseason 2 have intensified of late—and I’m convinced there’s just one way forStar Warsto pull this off.

Liam Neeson as Qui Gon Force Ghost in Obi Wan Kenobi

Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 Needs Liam Neeson

Obi-Wan’s Training Was The Biggest Storyline Season 1 Set Up

IfObi-Wan Kenobiseason 2 is in the works, which remains only speculative for now, thenthe show needs Liam Neeson’s return to really work. At the end ofObi-Wan Kenobiseason 1, Obi-Wan returned from his journey across the galaxy to save little Princess Leia Organa to find his former master waiting for him as a Force Ghost.

This story had been set up nearly two decades earlier, inStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, when Master Yoda told Obi-Wan that he had training for him on Tatooine. It was also clear, based on Obi-Wan’s ability to become a Force Ghost inA New Hope, that he had learned this skill.

However, we have yet to see this training on-screen. Arguably, the return of Qui-Gon Jinn is really the only story left forObi-Wan Kenobito explore for Obi-Wan. It wouldn’t make sense for him to reconnect with Luke, nor would it be right for him to leave Tatooine.Obi-Wan Kenobiseason 2 therefore needs Liam Neeson.

The return of Qui-Gon Jinn is really the only story left forObi-Wan Kenobito explore for Obi-Wan.

Can Lucasfilm Convince Liam Neeson To Return?

Neeson Previously Indicated He Was Unlikely To Return To Star Wars

Obviously, among the biggest obstacles to making the return of Qui-Gon Jinn happen is convincing Liam Neeson to reprise his role inStar Warsin a much more substantial way than was done inObi-Wan Kenobiseason 1. In that season, Neeson had a true cameo that was mere seconds.

This training storyline would require a much more significant role for Neeson, andLiam Neeson’s comments about Qui-Gon’s returndon’t exactly inspire hope that this could happen. Speaking exclusively withScreenRantlast year, Neeson said:

“I enjoyed very much being with Ewan and George Lucas on The Phantom Menace…We shot that 26 years ago! Would I do it again? I don’t think so. Too ******* old, ya know? I can’t see the situation, I really can’t, you know?”

Based on those comments, Neeson’s willingness to return for a full-fledged season ofObi-Wan Kenoobiseems doubtful. Yet,Neeson would be very far from the firstStar Warsactor to insist he wouldn’t be coming back only for the announcement of his return to come relatively soon after.

In fact, Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor did this very thing, ardently denying that he was coming back, only to later reveal this had been done to cover up his thrilling return to the franchise. WhileObi-Wan Kenobiseason 2 has yet to be confirmed, ifStar Warsdoes bring this show back, it needs Liam Neeson.
