Brooklyn Nine-Ninehad a great crossover that was so well-executed, it’s a huge shame it only happened once. Although theBrooklyn Nine-Ninecastwas a powerhouse of comedic actors, it was always fun when other stars temporarily joined the show. While some ofBrooklyn Nine-Nine’s greatest guest starsplayed brand-new characters, this wasn’t always the case.

Thebest crossover episodesallow both sets of characters and settings to shine, but that’s not always possible. Some of the more involved crossovers are two-way, rather than just one show invading the other without the act being reciprocated. Either way, they often result in a landmark occasion that only happens once during a show’s run. This was unfortunately true inBrooklyn Nine-Nine’s crossover.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Crossover With New Girl Should Have Been A Semi-Regular Occurrence

TheNew Girlcast blended withBrooklyn Nine-Nine’s in 2016when both sitcoms aired episodes that included characters from the other.New Girlseason 6, episode 4, “Homecoming,” was admittedly more of a thorough crossover, as it featured cameos from numerous members of the other show’s cast.Brooklyn Nine-Nineseason 4, episode 4, “The Night Shift,” only brought Zooey Deschanel’s Jessica Day into the fold.

Jess had great chemistry with Captain Raymond “Velvet Thunder” Holt (Andre Braugher) and the other members of the 99th precinct.

WhileBrooklyn Nine-Nineonly briefly acknowledgedNew Girl,“Homecoming” showcased the true possibilities of what such a crossover event could hold. Jess had great chemistry with Captain Raymond “Velvet Thunder” Holt (Andre Braugher) and the other members of the 99th precinct, making it a disappointment that the two shows only collided once.

“The Night Shift” and “Homecoming” premiered back-to-back.

Fans ofNew Girlare very likely to also enjoyBrooklyn Nine-Nine, and vice versa. Both sitcoms have a very similar sense of humor and strong ensemble casts. I’m sure further crossovers would have been welcomed with open arms by viewers, and only doing it once feels like a waste of the reveal that the two shows form a shared universe.

Coach’s New Girl exit could have allowed more crossovers

New Girlis set in Los Angeles andBrooklyn Nine-Nineis obviously set in New York. It’s not a short trip between both settings, so it’s perhaps understandable thatNBC couldn’t find more opportunities for the sitcoms to cross over againafter “The Night Shift” and “Homecoming.” Well, it would have been understandable, if there didn’t exist an untapped possibility.

AfterNew Girl’s pilot, Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) left the show. He came back in season 3 and remained a member of the core cast until the season 4 finale. He moved to New York and only returned occasionally.None of theNew Girlcharacters ever go to visit Coach, which could have allowed for a handful of other crossover episodes withBrooklyn Nine-Nine.
