This week’sThe Young and the Restlessis promising some developments that could lead to long-term storylines. Now that the bigCane Ashby/Aristotle DumasYoung & the Restlessmysteryhas been largely resolved, it’s opening up the soap opera for new plotlines and to pick up the threads of others that have been sidelined for weeks.

The biggest development, of course, was the passing of Cole Howard (J. Eddie Peck) from Legionnaire’s Disease in last week’s latest new episode that aired on Thursday, July 3. While it wasn’t a surprise, it was sudden, and the reverberations of his passing will continue to be felt this week. With that happening in Genoa City and the drama happening in France, this week will be a busy one forThe Young and the Restless’s cast of characters.

New Storylines Open Up & Old Ones Continue

Now thatlast week’sThe Young and the Restless(June 30-July 4)has finally started to open up the show and remember the storylines unfolding beyond the boundaries of Aristotle Dumas' estate in France, this week will continue that. While theCane Ashby vs. Victor Newman feud storylineno doubt continues to be the biggest plot-driver, things are heating up back in Genoa City, as well.

What Big Storyline We’re Following This Week

Cole’s Passing Will Continue To Be Felt

Of course, the drama Cane Ashby is stirring up as he makes his play for Chancellor Industries and to grow his empire is still front and center. Still, the other big storyline, considering the episode synopses, is that Cole passed last week, and now it’s up to Victoria and Claire to pick up the pieces and move on.

Cole had previously been diagnosed with Legionnaire’s Disease, and while it can be treated if caught quickly enough, Cole’s wasn’t. Obviously, his death will have a big impact on the series, but especially Victoria, as Cole had always been her greatest love. She also has their daughter, Claire, to worry about, as well. Mother and daughter will have to lean on each other now.

Death, Drama, & New Romances Abound

Battle lines continue to be drawn between Victor and Cane, with everyone else deciding if they’re on one of their sides or in it for themselves. Phyllis, as she so often is, appears poised to be the wild card, and we know that while she’s angling for Cane at the moment, that could very well change if she feels the momentum is turning against him. One thing we know for sure is that Phyllis will always find herself aligning with the center of power - or trying to, anyway.

It also certainly appears that one couple is about to break up and two new ones are about to set sail. As Kyle and Audra continue their flirtation in France, Holden and Claire appear to be starting their own sweeter romance. It’s pretty clear that Kyle and Claire are growing apart. Kyle and Audra are what they are, but Claire and Holden are a genuinely intriguing possibility with long-term potential. Meanwhile, Lily makes a move on Damian, which is sure to crush Cane.

Of course, the big storyline, as noted above, is Cole’s death. While it will understandably hit Victoria and Claire hardest, it will still rock the town of Genoa City and its residents. Everyone returning from France is already dealing with the drama of Cane Ashby reappearing after having been gone for six years, and now they’ll learn of the loss of Cole, setting up a very tense time forThe Young and the Restlessin the next few weeks.
