Warning! Spoilers for Immortal Thor ahead!
Marvel’s currentThorseries is nearing its end, but before it is over, the series has a few more thrilling updates to the earliest days of the Marvel Universe’s lore, asthe penultimate issue finds God of Thunder and his allies dangerously trapped in the primordial living city where the Elder Gods reside.
Immortal Thor#24, written by Al Ewing, with art by Jan Bazaldua, finds Thor, accompanied by Loki, Skurge, and others, lost in the labyrinthine city of NRGL, after having killed Kemur, the original King of Kings and God of Gods. As lofty as those titles might be, taking out Kemur has only opened the door to greater peril, and Marvel has repeatedly teased that Thor won’t survive the climax of the series.

In fact, according to Marvel’s synopsis for therebootedThorseries to follow, it seems that all of Asgard is actually in danger of being wiped from existence.

Carrying the tagline “even an immortal can die,“Immortal Thor#24 has the heavy narrative burden of leaving all the pieces in place for the series finale, which is set to have massive consequences forThorlore, as Marvel’s solicitation for the upcomingThor#1 reveals the publisher’s plans to massively reshape reality, writing Asgard out of continuity. Yet the “how” and the “why” of that paradigm shift are very much up in the air, andthe dramatic journey of the final two issues ofImmortal Thorwill be how they arrive at that endpoint.
As powerful as Thor, and his iconic hammer Mjolnir, might be, the living city of NRGL and its Elder God inhabitants are orders of magnitude stronger.

Part of what has madeImmortal Thorsuch an effective addition to Thor’s Marvel Comics history is that it has pitted the God of Thunder against even more powerful deities, effectively giving Thor a sense of what it is like for mortals to get on his bad side during his heroic tenure on Earth. As powerful as Thor, andhis iconic hammer Mjolnir, might be, the living city of NRGL and its Elder God inhabitants are orders of magnitude stronger, more dangerous, and more malevolent, suggesting Thor has found a fight where he is in over his head.
As “Immortal Thor” Reaches Its End, Many Questions About The Elder Gods Remain
How Will The Elder Gods Impact Marvel’s Mythos Moving Forward?
Among the most exciting aspects ofImmortal Thoris the way it has redefined the hierarchy of godly power in the Marvel Universe, revealing thatthe Asgardians are far from the most imposing deitiesthe cosmos has to offer. However, what the new Asgard-less “reality” of Marvel canon is going to look like moving forward is a huge question mark;according to author Al Ewing, who will pen the follow-upThorseries as well,Immortal Thoris only “Act One” of a much larger, more ambitious storyline.
With that in mind, it is also worth questioning what role the Elder Gods will play in the upcoming series; they have made satisfying, effective antagonists for Thor throughout the current run, butwith the hero set to be “reborn” as a mortal, it remains to be determined whether the Elder Gods will continue to have a presence in the series, or if, perhaps, the erasure of Asgard is an inadvertent side effect of Thor triumphing over his primordial foes, even at the cost of his own life.
