Marvel’s currentThorseries is nearing its end, but before it is over, the series has a few more thrilling updates to the earliest days of the Marvel Universe’s lore, asthe penultimate issue finds God of Thunder and his allies dangerously trapped in the primordial living city where the Elder Gods reside.
Immortal Thor#24, written by Al Ewing, with art by Jan Bazaldua, finds Thor, accompanied by Loki, Skurge, and others, lost in the labyrinthine city of NRGL, after having killed Kemur, the original King of Kings and God of Gods. As lofty as those titles might be, taking out Kemur has only opened the door to greater peril, and Marvel has repeatedly teased that Thor won’t survive the climax of the series.
In fact, according to Marvel’s synopsis for therebootedThorseries to follow, it seems that all of Asgard is actually in danger of being wiped from existence.

With that in mind, it is also worth questioning what role the Elder Gods will play in the upcoming series; they have made satisfying, effective antagonists for Thor throughout the current run, butwith the hero set to be “reborn” as a mortal, it remains to be determined whether the Elder Gods will continue to have a presence in the series, or if, perhaps, the erasure of Asgard is an inadvertent side effect of Thor triumphing over his primordial foes, even at the cost of his own life.
