Today’s Connections Category Hints

Be careful not to go to your first instinct with a word’s definition in today’s puzzle, as they are very easy to misinterpret. The challenge I had when solving today’s puzzle was finding a good starting point with the themes behind today’s four categories. After some trial and error, I realized that the themes for today wereaction and standing, with the second part referring more to someone’s reputation.

If you want to go all out with some of your clue-searching,you should look at the category namesto get some extra help. There are also spoilers for each category if you find yourself needing to solve a single category to finish up.
TONGUE
UPPER
At first, this section of the puzzle was tricky for me to solve, as I imagined that FACE went with TONGUE for a different concept. Upon some reflection though, I realized thatHEEL refers to the back part of a shoe, with a TONGUE being integral to the interior of the same piece of clothing. When I thought about the SOLE and UPPER parts of a shoe, the rest of this category came together naturally.
ROOM
SEATING
ROOM is a word with narrow definitions, either as a physical space or referring to having enough room to fit people in a space. This led me to pick CHAIRS and SEATING as the next words in this category, asI imagined people were making ROOM for some larger event. To help finalize this part of the puzzle, I realized that you have to have enough CAPACITY to fit everyone in a ROOM for whatever event you might put together.
REGARD
STANDING
This part of the puzzle was the easiest for me to solve, mostly because I thought of FACE as"saving face.“This idea about reputation was already in my mind, assomeone would want to protect their IMAGE or STANDINGin the world. To get the final word, I thought about how people often hold others in high or low REGARD, which also relates to this category’s theme.
GIMMICK
MILDEW
This is likely the trickiest part of the puzzle, as words like GIMMICK and DYNASTY have very strict definitions. One common pattern I noticed between these words, though, is how they ended.DYNASTY ends in"nasty,“while GIMMICK has"ick"at the end of it. Similarly,ENGROSS has"gross"and MILDEW has"ew,“forming the only connective tissue between each concept to finish off the puzzle.
