Several terms in today’sConnectionspuzzle are used as descriptors, either of something larger or something specific. I found that this led to many phrases that weren’t easy to pin down into any category, with many broad meanings that could easily get confused with something else. The challenge this creates makes it easy to make unnecessary mistakes, so you may need some clues to find the right answers.
You shouldn’t always trust your first instinct in today’s puzzle to define words, as many of them can easily get mixed up. Since youonly have four chances to make a mistakebefore losing, you have to take your time to understand every possible context one phrase could connect to another one. Similar to theLetter BoxedNYT puzzles, you have to find patterns to correctly discover the right path.

Today’s Connections Category Hints
May 23 #712
I was able to solve today’s puzzle by focusing onfinding at least three words with similar meanings first. Without taking a guess, you can find at least two categories that comprise at least three different phrases based on the right context. Don’t be afraid to take your time doing this, as it saves you from wasting one of your limited mistakes without learning anything.

If you want to go all out with some of your clue-searching,you should look at the category namesto get some extra help. There are also spoilers for each category if you find yourself needing to solve a single category to finish up.
BLOWOUT
RAVE
This was the easiest part of the puzzle for me, as I know thatsome parties are large enough to become a RAVE or BLOWOUT. The flashing lights of a rave can also be replaced with a more personal BASH between friends. In whichever case, any type of party defined as each of those three terms would undoubtedly be a BLAST for those involved, creating this category naturally.
MAKEUP
NATURE
At first, I thought that MAKEUP referred to products applied to your face to enhance beauty, pairing with GLASSES or EYELINER. However, after some reflection, I realized thatsomeone’s true NATURE defined the FIBER of their CHARACTER. Someone’s genetic or physical MAKEUP was the only other term that fit this connection to form the right answer.
POUND
STONE
When I started today’s puzzle, I putPOUND and OUNCE together for units of measurement, which led toward the right answer. That being said, it took me some time to see DRAM as another word used to measure something else, but only in one area of the world. Looking up coloquial terms for weighing other objects, I saw that STONE was in a similar boat to form the last connection needed for this category.
MARBLE
NEBULA
This was, by far, the hardest section of the puzzle for me, as none of these words seem to have any pattern to begin with.EYELINER and GLASSES were the only ones I had together for begin associated with something people put on their face. With no other options and the other categories solved, though, I put MARBLE and NEBULA together as a guess, granting me the last right answer I needed.
