AlthoughMy Hero Academiafalls into the shōnen genre, this hasn’t stopped fans from being eager to see if Izuku Midoriya andOchaco Uraraka would canonically form a relationshipin the end. When pressed for more details on the matter, creator Kohei Horikoshi had very few words to say and didn’t comment one way or another about whether the pair actually got together.
As cited in theMy Hero AcademiaPlus Ultra Guide Book, Horikoshi urges readers to instead refer to thenew volume that is releasing this upcoming October, volume #42. The latest manga in the franchise will cover the ending of the series as well as the epilogue detailing the lives of the heroes after the world is saved and what they are up to presently.

As one of the main pairings inMy Hero Academia, Ochaco and Izuku were one of the most highly anticipated couples to becanonically confirmed in the manga’s epilogue, as it covered class 1-A’s fates in a “Where are they now?” style ending. Chapter #431 reunites the class in a spectacular reunion, and towards the end, Ochako, who has been wrestling with these feelings of unease as of late, realizes that there’s still something that she has yet to act upon.
Visions of Himiko Toga have been haunting her, and she’s unsure of whether it’s due to unresolved trauma or if Toga is trying to tell her something. Only when she reunites with Deku does she realize that it must have been the feelings she’s quieted down for years in preparation for the large-scale fight of heroes vs villains. Although not a lot is said in thischapter between Deku and Ochacoregarding their actual feelings for one another, Horikoshi believes that there is enough nuance in this scene to carry out what could be the next step in their relationship, beginning to develop.

Horikoshi’s comment may not have confirmed a canonical ending, but it carries enough weight to allow it to be interpreted freely by its audience. It’s subtle and sweet, clumsy and wholesome, which has always been the underlying theme for these two characters.My Hero Academiamay never have set out to fully explore how Deku and Ochaco’s relationship would evolve throughout the series, since it is a shōnen at heart, but it did a wonderful job of hinting at the budding feelings, respect and admiration, and how what once started out as something child-like carried through to adulthood.
