The bestStar Warscharacter of 2025 has made herself clear, but the future of the franchise may fail to realize her potential. When concerning thebest characters in all ofStar Wars, the highest-ranked ones tend to be those who have appeared in several of the major movies or TV shows. However, there are some characters who are beloved despite not appearing as much as the likes of Luke or Anakin Skywalker, thanks to their appearances in exceptionally written projects like thebestStar WarsTV show:Andor.

By the time ofAndorseason 2’s ending, the show had solidified itself as the strongest the franchise has to offer. A big factor in this wasAndorseason 2’s cast of characters, with soldiers like the titular Cassian, leaders like Luthen Rael, and understatedly important rebels like Kleya making themselves known as some of the most compelling figures inStar Wars. However, oneStar Warscharacter fromAndorstood tall above the rest, in my opinion, and solidified herself as the best of 2025, though I fear the future of the franchise will waste her potential.

Mon Mothma Is The Best Star Wars Character Of 2025

The Senator Was A Remarkable Screen Presence In Andor’s Two Seasons

The character in question is Mon Mothma. BeforeAndor, Mon Mothma was simply an underdeveloped, albeit slightly iconic, leader ofStar Wars’Rebel Alliance. Her appearances inReturn of the Jedi, her somewhat notorious deleted scene fromStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, her cameo inRogue One, and her episode ofStar WarsRebelsmeant that Mon Mothma was known, but only on the level of other “B-tier"Star Warsheroes. AfterAndor, though, this has changed.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Tony Gilroy, his writing team, and Genevieve O’Reilly,Andorhas solidified Mon Mothma as one of the single-best characters in the entire franchise. The depth of Mon’s story inAndorwas unexpected and, as a result, utterly compelling. In 2025,Andorseason 2 only built on her amazing story from season 1, providing even more of a focus on the character’s fraying patience with the Empire’s cruel crimes. The outstanding installments ofAndorseason 2, episodes 7-9brought this to a head in the best way, solidifying Mon Mothma asStar Wars' best character of 2025.

Mon Mothma Perfectly Fits Star Wars' New Republic Timeline

Mon Would Fit The Future Of Star Wars

Concerning howStar Warscould capitalize on the excellent depiction of Mon Mothma in 2025, the future of the franchise seems promising on paper.UpcomingStar Warsmoviesare due to be set in the New Republic timeline of the franchise, be itThe Mandalorian and Groguor Dave Filoni’s other movie set in that era. Then there are other upcomingStar WarsTV shows beyondAndorthat are set in a similar timeframe, one that fits Mon’s character extremely well.

In this era of theStar Warstimeline, Mon Mothma is the Chancellor of the New Republic. This was confirmed inAhsokaseason 1, in which Genevieve O’Reilly appeared as the character at a hearing for New Republic officials. AfterAhsokaseason 1’s ending, which saw Grand Admiral Thrawn return to theStar Warsgalaxy looking to reinstate the Empire, it would make sense for the New Republic to become more officially involved in the fight against him.Mon is no stranger to opposing Imperial regimes, meaning the future of theStar Warsfranchise fits her perfectly.

Will Star Wars' Future Waste The Potential Mon Mothma Showed In 2025?

Mon’s Strengths May Be Confined To Andor

Despite the perfect link between Mon Mothma and the New Republic timeline, it may be the reality that the character’s true potential will not be realized going forward. For one, a big reason why Mon’s character has improved so drastically was the excellent writing of Tony Gilroy and his team onAndor. That show is so inherently different from otherStar Warsproperties, allowing its writing to be much more mature, in-depth, and geared toward compelling character work than the more surface-level action/adventure-based writing of usualStar WarsTV.

While the likes of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni certainly have their strengths inStar Wars, neither of them can write the intricacies ofStar Warspolitics as well as Gilroy…

Mon has always been an intriguing character, but there is no denying that her franchise-best status after 2025 is solely because of her treatment inAndorby Gilroy and the show’s other writers. In the future of the franchise, Mon will be handled by other filmmakers. While the likes of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni certainly have their strengths inStar Wars, neither of them can write the intricacies ofStar Warspolitics as well as Gilroy.

Therefore, this means that, although Mon could appear inAhsokaseason 2, for example, she likely will not be written with the same intense focus she was inAndor. Also,The Mandalorian and Grogu, despite taking place in the New Republic timeline, was filmed beforeAndorseason 2’s immense success, potentially meaning O’Reilly was deemed unnecessary to include, thus rendering Mon Mothma obsolete in the story. Due to these reasons,I worry thatStar Warswill waste Mon Mothma’s excellent potential post-2025.

There Is Still Time For Star Wars To Capitalize On Mon Mothma’s Andor Success

The Franchise Has Even More Reason To Do So After Andor Season 2

All that being said, there is still a way forStar Warsto include Mon Mothma in the New Republic timeline after proving how great she is inAndor. AlthoughThe Mandalorian and GroguorAhsokamay not make the most of Mon’s character, neither project is expected to end the New Republic saga.UpcomingStar WarsTV showswill likely be announced to follow on fromAhsokaseason 2, with Dave Filoni’sMandalorian-era film still confirmed to be in the works.

After seeing how well Mon Mothma has been written and received inAndor, future New Republic stories could make more of an effort to include her. IfThe Mandalorian and Grogumissed out on this chance, Filoni’s big-screen movie might not. While Filoni’s writing for Mon inAhsokawas not as strong as Gilroy’s inAndor,he could make a more concerted effort to strike that tone inAhsokaseason 3 or other New Republic stories. Overall,Star Warshas not completely missed out on the chance to utilize its best character of 2025 going forward, and I just hope the franchise does not waste that potential.
