Wednesday, Netflix’s unique reinterpretation ofThe Addams Familyfranchise, has received a major season 3 writing update ahead of the show’s season 2 premiere. Netflix recently revealed thatWednesdayseason 3 was already in the works. While this news was certainly a welcome relief, it wasn’t necessarily surprising, given the first season’s immense success – alongsideStranger ThingsandSquid Game, it’s one of the streamer’s most popular shows of all time.
While the first half ofWednesdayseason 2is mere days away, the wait for the second season has been long. The series first premiered in November 2022, roughly two and a half years ago, which is a significant hiatus, even among other Netflix Originals. Thankfully, though, there’s a chance we won’t have to wait as long forWednesdayseason 3.

In an interview withCollider,Wednesdayco-creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar revealed that, while they’d be taking a break to mark the premiere of season 2,work on the third season was already well underway.Gough shared:
“We’re actually in the writers' room for season 3.So we’re down the road a bit in the writers' room, but now we, of course, stop to launch season 2.”
The duo also confirmed that season 3 ofWednesdaywould consist of eight episodes, although horror-comedy legend Tim Burton’s directorial involvement was still uncertain. Burton directed four episodes in both season 1 and season 2.
What This Means For Wednesday Season 3
We Might Not Have To Wait As Long
In light ofWednesday’s nearly three-year-long wait, the creators' update is incredibly promising. If the showrunners are already working on season 3 ofWednesday, there’s a real chance we won’t have to wait as long for the third season. Presumably,Wednesday’s upcoming season will be just as, if not even more successful, than season 1. Surely, Netflix will want to maintain the show’s momentum.
In that same interview withCollider, Gough and Millar, who also createdSmallville, explained thatshooting a single, eight-episode season ofWednesdaytakes roughly nine months. The visual effects work is so demanding, though, that the pair estimated:
“…18 months would be the bare minimum we can get the show back up just from production to air.”
If we’re lucky, the progress in the writers' room means we’ll seeWednesdayseason 3 in two years, rather than nearly three.
Our Take On Wednesday’s Future
Netflix Believes In The Show’s Success
While it’s impossible to say whatWednesdayseason 3 will be about without having seen season 2, it’s clear that Netflix believes in the show’s future. With season 2 set to give the rest of Wednesday’s family more to do – it’s also introducing new family members, like Grandmama Addams – there may be room for the show’s mysteries to grow beyond the haunted halls of Nevermore in season 3.

During a separate interview, Millar also recently shared that he and Gough are willing to"take as many seasons as Netflix wants to give us,“and that they already have ideas in mind for the show’s future. As we count down the days until season 2, we can at least rest easy thatWednesdaywon’t be canceled any time soon.
