Matthew McConaugheyand Woody Harrelson’s Apple TV+ showBrothershas been hit with a major setback. Partly inspired by their real-life friendship, the comedy series features Harrelson and McConaughey playing fictional versions of themselves as their families begin living together at McConaughey’s Texas ranch. Along with starring together inTrue Detectiveseason 1, they have also worked together on the 1999 movieEDtvand the 2008 movieSurfer, Dude. ForBrothers, Harrelson and McConaughey are joined by series regulars Oona Yaffe, Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, and Noah Carganilla.

According toDeadline,Brothers’production has now been paused after showrunner David West Read exited the show. His departure is reportedly due to creative disagreements about how the season should end, as eight of the 10 episodes have already been filmed. Lee Eisenberg, who previously created the comedy seriesJury DutyandLittle America, is in discussions to become the new showrunner to film the final episodes and to oversee reshoots. No date has been given yet for when production will resume.

What This Means For Brothers

The Show’s Production & Release Timelines Have Changed

Even if Eisenberg quickly agrees to becomeBrothers' new showrunner,it will likely be a while before production begins again. Rewrites will probably be needed for the final two episodes and to reshoot the previous eight episodes due to a change in creative vision. There will need to be consistency between what has already been filmed, what has not yet been filmed, and for the reshoots, and it will take time to solidify this before filming resumes.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s reunion showwas first announced in March 2023. Even if production picks back up in 2025,the very earliest that the series will be released is 2026. This means that at least three years will have passed between the initial announcement and the show’s debut, and audiences will have to continue waiting a while to see McConaughey and Harrelson playing these fictional versions of themselves.

Our Take On Brothers' Setback

It Is Disappointing, But There Is Still Hope

An indefinite production pause and losing a showrunner are disappointing developments forBrothers. That being said, it is good news that the project is still very much alive, and the majority of it has even been filmed, meaning this will not be a case of a promising show being canceled during production.Woody Harrelson’s best movies and TV shows, along with those of McConaughey, rarely disappoint, especially when they work together. While it will take more time than expected,Brotherscould still be worth the wait, and prove to be another memorable collaboration for the stars.
