Wuchang: Fallen Feathersis full of difficult and frustrating boss fights, but one of the more annoying bosses you’ll face in the mid-game is Mistress of the Night Huang Yan. I say this boss is annoying largely because of how much she moves around and how frustrating it can be to get up close and deal effective damage. Fortunately, there are a handful of tricks you can use to take her out.

Wuchang’sbosses are a key reason it stands out and feels so much like beloved Soulsborne games, withchallenging boss fightsthat sometimes feel straight out ofSekiroorDark Souls. You’ll have to adapt to each battle and tap into their fortitude and persistence if you really want to defeat some of the tougher bosses in the game, and Mistress of the Night Huang Yan is a prime example of this challenge.

Where To Find Mistress Of The Night Huang Yan

Huang Yan Is Found In The Cloudspire Region

To get to Mistress of the Night Huang Yan, you’ll first have to make your way to the third major region in the game, Cloudspire. After navigating through the Rebel Camp and defeating both General of the North Ai Nengqi andMing General Liu Cheng’enat Snowpeak Pass, you’ll finally find yourself in Cloudspire City.

While the city is full of many nooks and crannies, along with a ton of enemies hiding around corners that will gank you off ledges right and left, you’ll eventually learn the route and find yourself in a large plaza where you’re able to activate the Snowfall Palace shrine. Looking straight ahead, you’ll see a stairwell leading up to the palace main hall, andthere are some goodies waiting for you there on both the top and lower levels.

However, the main boss that you need to defeat to progress, Huang Yan, is found to the right of the stairwell, which you’ll learn if you knock on the doors in the plaza and get a tip from one of the citizens hiding indoors.Take the path to the right to the “Treasure Trove” hallwayand take the elevator down. The entrance to The Mistress of Night arena is on your right, behind the middle curtains.

How To Prepare For Mistress Of The Night

The Palace Maid’s Set Is Decent Against Huang Yan

To best prepare for the fight against Mistress of the Night Huang Yan, you’ll want toequip an armor set with decent Corruption and Frostbite resistances. A great option is the Palace Maid’s set, which is conveniently dropped by defeating various Palace Maid-type enemies throughout Snowfall Palace. Either the Palace Maid’s Satin Dress or Junior Maid’s Garments are decent options, but anything with relatively high Corruption and/or Frostbite resistance will do.

In terms of weapon loadouts and build setup, there are a range of approaches you can take to defeat Mistress of the Night. Personally,I opted for a Flamebringer Longsword build that incorporates the Flame Bone Needleand the Crescent Moon Discipline. This build is effective for dealing maximum Burn buildup, which Huang Yan is weak to.

Each weapon tree in the Impetus Repository has a node dedicated to a quick heavy charged attack when used with Skyborn Might, which is effective against most humanoid bosses.

That said, a build incorporating Fire damage on different weapon types is also effective against her. Regardless of your build, you’ll want to position yourself for a charged heavy backstab attack on her as often as possible, which willknock her prone for an instant Obliterate opportunity. Be sure to equip Frostbite-mitigating consumables such as Kong Wine or Sapphire Lotus Seeds as well.

How To Defeat The Mistress Of The Night Huang Yan

Huang Yan’s First Stage Features Corruption & Frostbite Spells

When you first start the encounter, Huang Yan will almost always immediately teleport to a different location in the arena. From here, depending on your location, she might cast a spell that launches orbs of Corruption back and forth across the map, which you’ll want to avoid at all costs. When you get up close to her, she has a range of different moves she’ll employ, including Corruption spells and/or melee attacks.

There are three Corruption spells to watch for. The first can be anticipated when you see her take a puff from her pipe, and you’ll hear a charm ring out, after which she will wave her lantern and projectballs of Corruption in two waves horizontally in front of her.Dodge to the side of these and get behind her for a quick charged heavy attack.

The second Corruption spell will burst out from her like an explosion, and if you’re close by, it will instantly kill you. Finally, she will throw an orb of Corruption into the air that willshoot out smaller orbs of Corruption and home in on you until it dissipates.

Aside from the Corruption spells, she will also breathe a line of Frostbite in front of her which you’ll want to avoid at all costs. In addition to these spells, she will strike out and attack you with a series of kick attacks, which cannot be deflected. She can alsodeflect your attacks at times with her pipe,so be careful when you are trying to gain advantage behind her back.

The Mistress Of The Night Transforms Into A Snow Fox In Stage Two

When you get Huang Yan down to about half health, she will start to transform into a flying snow fox that will dart at you quickly and deal Frostbite damage as well as deplete a majority of your health. You’ll need to dodge these attacks at the last second for Skyborn Might stacks. She willintermittently return to this form throughout the second stage, but you’ll know when it’s coming when she surrounds herself quickly with a cloud of ice.

Throughout the fight, aside from your charged heavy attacks, you can hit Huang Yan from behind with the Echo of Dhutanga flame spelland knock her down for an obliterate attack as well. This is a great alternative that can sometimes be easier to land than a quick charged heavy. Flame attacks in general are recommended against her, but the key is to circle behind her when she’s casting spells for the perfect opportunity to knock her prone.

Ultimately, Mistress of the Night Huang Yan is not too difficult to defeat once you get the timing down for her move set and know which spells to watch for. You will get a sense of when to dodge the Snow Fox attacks in the second stage, the final of which comes much faster and slams into the ground where you’re standing, so be sure to dodge. If you consistently circle behind Huang Yan, you can easily take her out and claim victory over one ofWuchang: Fallen Feathers’most annoying bosses.
