Whenfour young new mutantsstumbled into the Haven House and onto Rogue’s Louisiana X-Men lineup, they didn’t even know each other that well. Yet still, the Outliers have officially become family to one another. Though they all have rough upbringings and issues within their biological families, the teen mutants have really established a close bond as the X-Men’s next generation.
Hotoru’s ghastly death-based mutant powersmake him one of the more strange additions to the franchise, but his previewed moment with Ransom inUncanny X-Men #19is both heartwarming and relatable. Despite their fantastical abilities, all these young mutants want are loved ones and a place to belong, and Deathdream finally has that with his fellow Outliers at Haven House.

There aren’t many details about Hotoru’s bleak past, but it’s known that he died several times when he was born and communicated with his mother after her death. Despite his tragic backstory, Deathdream now has a home where he can be a younger brother nurtured by his mutant mentors, andhe even has a Sentinel dog that loves him, too.
