Invinciblecreator Robert Kirkman has teased what’s to come in season 4, hinting at where Mark’s (Steven Yeun) story is going and the consequences of his revelation. Theend ofInvincibleseason 3saw Mark and Eve (Gillian Jacobs) win their battle against Conquest (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), who Mark believes he killed. In his final scene of the episode, he sits at the bedside of his brother, Oliver (Christian Convery), who was injured in the battle. He tells him he was right about killing villains when they have the chance, promising to kill anyone who harms their family again.

Speaking withDeadline, Kirkman addressed the dynamic between Mark and Oliver, explaining its importance going intoInvincibleseason 4. He said that, while Mark didn’t agree with his little brother’s philosophy at first,Conquest’s attack made him believe killing antagonists can be justified. The series creator teased how this will change him going into season 4, also confirming a bigger focus on the Viltrumite storyline and the arrival of their leader, Thragg. Check out what Kirkman had to say below:

Mark Grayson/Invincible crying and with his face bruised while fighting Conquest in Invincible Season 3 Ep 8

I think it’s good to give Mark as many outside influences as possible. One thing that we dealt with in Season 2 was, “Am I becoming my father?” And his fear of that. And one of the results of interacting with his father was that he brought Oliver home. Oliver has the same dad but is from an alien world. As Mark interacts with Oliver, he gets to see how Oliver sees the world versus how Mark sees the world. So, it’s an interesting contrast to see how someone who has superpowers, who shares the same father, and who lives in the same house can have a wildly different view. For Mark, his feelings can sometimes be scary when he seemingly agrees with some of the crazy things that Oliver is saying. For example, after he’s killed the Mauler twins.

But the interesting note over the course of Season 3 is that Oliver says very harsh things that make you worry. Then, by the end of the season, the completion of Mark’s arc is that he’s more aligned with Oliver than he was before. So, by the end of this season, you should be worried for where Mark is headed in Season 4 and beyond.

Invincible Season 3 Poster

Thragg is cast and will be in Season 4. So, I won’t reveal anything other than if you’ve been watching the show since Season 1, you might be like, “Hey, when is there going to be more Viltrumite stuff?” I will say that Season 4 has more Viltrumite stuff that you might be wanting. In Season 2, we got the cool Anissa stuff and then Nolan’s story. In Season 3, we got Conquest, and Nolan’s story, and stuff going on in space with Allen. In Season 4, it really ramps up. So, the people that are loving that aspect of the show, you will definitely get more of that.

What Kirkman’s Statement Means For Mark In Invincible Season 4

A Darker Side Of Him Is About To Be Unleashed

Mark has already shown aggression toward major villains in season 3’s final episodes, seemingly intent on killing Angstrom Levy (Sterling K. Brown) during season 3, episode 7. He failed, but he still believes he killed Conquest, even though, in actuality, Cecil (Walton Goggins) trapped him in an underground GDA facility. With both massive, tragic battles happening back-to-back, it seems like the protagonist is done giving villainouscharacters inInvinciblechances to hurt more people, even if it means he’s going against the moral principles of other heroes in the process.

Given Kirkman’s statement, it seems likeInvincibleseason 4will see Mark in a more ruthless position when it comes to confronting threats to his family. Since the Viltrumite storyline will be adding even more tension to what comes next,he might be up against foes more powerful than any he’s faced before.Even so, his promise to Oliver to kill anyone that tries to threaten them means he’ll be doing whatever it takes to keep the people he loves safe, even at the cost of his heroism.

Our Take On Mark’s Next Chapter During Invincible Season 4

He’ll Have Plenty Of Chances To Make Good On His Promise

With his viewpoints now aligned with Oliver’s, Mark won’t be holding back anymore as new threats emerge duringInvincibleseason 4. This includes the incoming Viltrum Empire, as well as a TV show-exclusive storyline involving Damien Darkblood (Clancy Brown) in Hell. These developments will give him ample opportunity to make good on his promise to kill those threatening his family. The long-term consequences, however, likely won’t be felt until much later in the season.
